Paediatric Lower Limb Orthotic Devices:
An Introduction to orthoses

SOUTH AFRICAN NEURO DEVELOPMENTAL ASSOCIATION: PRESENTED SEPTEMBER 2015,TO THE BASIC PROGRAMME.
Most parents of a child with cerebral palsy will tell others that ensuring a child’s mobility and independence is about compensating for physical functions that don’t exist, and enhancing the capabilities a child is born with.

That, in essence, is the concept behind orthotics, which uses devices and instruments to help a child maintain his or her level of mobility, or correct physical issues that are preventing the child from being fully-ambulatory.

To Find the right set of orthotics occurs only after a child has undergone a physical assessment. And like so many other facets of having a child with a disability, improvement and adjustment comes over time, in stages. Sometimes, orthotic devices are temporary; other times, a child will need the orthotics for a lifetime. But in all scenarios, orthotic devices have the potential to bring the stability and alignment to young people that is required to grow, move, and be active participants in their own lives.

Paediatric Neurodevelopmental Orthotics

SOUTH AFRICAN NEURO DEVELOPMENTAL ASSOCIATION: PRESENTED 2018 TO THE SANDTA SOUTH GAUTENG BRANCH
Kirsten will be discussing the latest trends in paediatric neuro orthotics and their therapeutic links.  How the Orthotist and Therapist can set goals together to enable the child to function optimally.  Time will be given to discussing specific cases, including gait training and upper limb orthotics. Setting Orthotic Goals is only a small part of the larger rehabilitation process to improve function. To understand this larger rehabilitation process it is vital to understand that each of the individual Team Members have a role to play.
Orthotics are tool to enable greater function, and they will have a somewhat unimpressive impact on function and mobility if not paired with a great therapist, good home program and willing, compliant patients and parents. Optimal communication and transdisciplinary education occur when the patient, physician, Orthotist and therapist are all present for patient evaluation and long term follow ups. (Mainta)
An effective orthotic prescription summerizes medical issues related to the patient, details biomechanical functions desired and specifies key technical attributes of the desired orthosi.

Vascular Compression Therapy: A global perspective

DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY: MAY 2016 &  2017
Vascular Compression Therapy is currently a globally recognised treatment of choice for recurrent venous leg ulcers.

In our modern society venous disorders are a widespread condition and the trend is increasing.
Scientific studies have shown that an estimated 50% of the population suffer from changes in the leg veins.
  • 15% of those affected have a chronic venous disorder,
  • 6% already have visible skin disorders, and
  • 1% have venous crural ulcers

This Presentation is to educate on the incidences of vascular disorders, their respective presentations, and indicated orthotic treatments.

Lower Limb Paediatric Orthotics: A Brief Overview

SOUTH AFRICAN ORTHOTIC & PROSTHETIC ASSOCIATION: SEPTEMBER 2016 SOUTH AFRICAN ORTHOTIC PROSTHETIC ASSOCIATION CONGRESS ON
A Brief Overview of Physical presentations of Paediatric Patients that warrant Orthotic Intervention.
In Practice, South African Orthotists often find treating paediatric orthotic patients challenging with a need for a standardised Paediatric Orthotic Clinical tool being evident.

The basis of such a tool should assist in Identification of several possible clinical presentations of patients who warrant lower limb orthotic treatment and subsequently enable an Orthotist to identify the possible indicated Orthosis for that physical presentation.

By creating a consistent, comprehensive and systematic process for evaluating and treating pediatric presentations we improve patient outcomes.
The presentation will give attendees a brief understanding of:

  • Steps to Identify the Orthotic Treatment Plan
  • 7 clinical presentation groups
  • Orthotics indicated for the 7 Groups
