Scoliosis & Spinal Bracing: The Rigo Concept Journey
Finding out your child has scoliosis can be overwhelming. At Gibson Orthotics, we have a special interest in the Rigo Concept (Rigo Cheneau) style of spinal bracing.
This is not just a plastic shell; it is a highly specialized, 3D corrective tool designed to treat the specific curve of your child’s spine.

When should you see a Specialist Orthotist?
Scoliosis is most effectively treated when caught early. You should schedule a consultation if:
- A screening showed a curve: Your school nurse, physiotherapist or pediatrician noticed an asymmetry in the ribs or shoulders.
- The "Wait and See" approach is over: Your doctor has confirmed a Cobb Angle (curve) that requires active bracing.
- Current brace discomfort: Your child has an existing brace that is painful, causing skin breakdown, or no longer fits.
- Seeking a Specialist: You want a brace based on the Rigo Concept, which focuses on three-dimensional correction rather than just pushing the spine from the side.

DESIGN AND TYPE
Because every spine is unique, every brace we make is a "one-of-one" custom creation. Here is how we build your child’s brace:
1. Clinical Evaluation & 3D Imaging: We start by reviewing X-rays and performing a physical assessment. Instead of messy plaster, we use High-Definition 3D Scanning. This allows us to capture the exact shape of your child’s torso in seconds with millimeter precision.
2. The Rigo Concept Design: Using your 3D scan, we apply the principles of the Rigo Concept. We don't just "straighten" the spine; we design "expansion zones" into the brace. These allow the patient to breathe into specific areas to help the spine rotate back into a more natural position.
3. Precision Fabrication: Your digital file is sent to our specialized lab, where the brace is carved and molded using medical-grade, lightweight materials. This ensures the brace is as low-profile as possible under clothing.
4. The Fitting & Fine-Tuning: During the fitting, we ensure the "pressure" and "expansion" points are exactly where they need to be. We educate the patient on how to put the brace on (donning) and how to care for their skin.
