Cranial Remolding Orthosis

Cranial remoulding helmets in Johannesburg
If your baby has been identified with a positional head shape deformity — flat spots, asymmetry, or an unusually wide or narrow skull, a cranial remolding orthosis (helmet) may be recommended.

Gibson Orthotics is an authorized provider of the Orthomerica STARband, one of the most clinically studied and widely used cranial remolding systems in the world, with clinical data spanning over 30 years of use.

We fit all helmets using high-definition 3D scanning, performed by an HPCSA-registered orthotist with specialist training in infantile cranial conditions.
We work closely with our multidisciplinary partners at Early Bird Therapy to ensure each baby receives a coordinated treatment approach that addresses both head shape and any underlying developmental or postural factors.

Why the Orthomerica STARband?

The STARband is a custom-fitted, FDA 510(k)-cleared cranial remoulding orthosis manufactured by Orthomerica, a US-based medical device company with over three decades of specialist paediatric orthotic device development.
It is one of the most peer-reviewed cranial helmet systems globally, with published outcome data supporting its efficacy for positional plagiocephaly and brachycephaly when initiated within the optimal treatment window.
Each STARband is fabricated individually from a 3D scan of your baby's head,  ensuring a precise fit that accommodates the growth trajectory specific to your baby's curve pattern and age.
Gibson Orthotics is one of a small number of authorised STARband providers in Gauteng.

Cranial Orthosis Explained

A CRANIAL ORTHOSIS
Picture
Fits to the shape of the head and contains areas of space over the flattened regions.

The spaces allow natural growth of the head in these regions over a period of several weeks or months, allowing the structures to correct itself. There are no areas of direct pressure applied therefore ensuring a safe and painless treatment.

We will assess, scan, measure and monitor the growth of your baby’s head.
